WRITING WORKSHOP:  Children’s author Jackie Burke visited the school on Tuesday and spent time with 3rd and 4th classes.  She was very impressed by our “budding” writers and also read from her books.  Photos on school website www.ballylinannationalschool.com

CUMANN NA MBUNSCOL SKILLS: Footballers from 5th and 6th class travelled to Portlaoise last Friday to take part in trials to choose players who will play at the All Ireland Football finals and semi-finals  in Croke Park later in the summer.  This event attracts the elite of juvenile football in the county and we were well represented by Jane Bride, Shauna Kealy, Alison Walsh, Ryan Brady, Michéal Downey and Lochlann Kelleher.  The Laois representatives for Croke Park have yet to be announced.

MID-TERM BREAK:  The school closes tomorrow (Friday 29th) at the usual times and re-opens on Monday May 9th.

COMMUNITY NOTICES

LIP SYNC:  A reminder that tickets are now on sale for the big event to be held on Saturday May 7th.

PILATES:  8 week course commencing Tuesday May 10th @ 7pm in the Fitness Studio, Ballylinan.  All welcome – from beginners to advanced.  For further information contact Mary @ 086 3733327.

LIP SYNC FUNDRAISER:  Thanks to everyone for their support of the jersey day yesterday.  Ms. Mulhare is delighted to report that the event raised €430.

VACCINATIONS (Junior Infants):  The H.S.E. will visit the school on Wednesday May 18th.  More details to follow in the coming weeks.

STUDENT GAMES – ST. ABBAN’S:  Congratulations to Josh McDonald (6th Class) who was the overall U14 boys athlete at the sports held last Sunday.  Josh came 1st in the 80m sprint, 2nd in the 700m race and 1st in the shot putt.  Very impressive results!  Ciarán Cronin and Padraig Doyle also competed in the events.

JUVENILE ARTHRITIS: As part of a national awareness programme children from Mrs. Hurley’s class and Ms. Brennan’s (1st) will receive badges in the coming days.  Parents should monitor how they are worn.

COMMUNITY NEWS

G.A.A.:  Girls U8/U10/U12/U14 training every Monday 6.30 – 7.30 pm.  New players welcome!

LIP SYNC FUNDRAISING: 

  • Table Quiz: Saturday April 23rd, 9.30 pm – Murphys Bar.  1st Prize – €100.  Entry fee €40 for table of 4.  Finger food served and raffle on the night.

  • Underage Family Fun Day and Disco: Sunday April 24th, GAA Clubhouse, 12.30pm.  Disco with DJ Ginty from 2pm.  Admission €3.  Penalty shootout, face painting plus much more on the day.

BEREAVEMENT:  Our sincere sympathy to the McEvoy family on the untimely passing of Margaret.  She was part of our school community for many years and our thoughts and prayers are with Pat, Pádraig, Ellie, Therése and her extended family.

ARTS EXHIBITION:  A special 1916 exhibition will be launched at Athy Arts Centre this evening at 7.30 pm.  Children from 5th Class (Karol Donohoe, Jesse McEvoy, Rachel Wilkinson-Ryan, Sara Reilly, Emma Shanahan, Molly Zinn Collis and Tamara Davis) will display portraits of the 7 men who signed the proclamation and Ben Buckley  and Lorcan Page from 6th Class have written a poem “Easter 1916.”  (Photographs on school website).

ABBAN’S STUDENT GAMES: Sunday April 17th at 1.30 pm – St. Abban’s Sports Grounds.

LipSync FUNDRAISING:  As you are probably know by now Ballylinan GAA and St. Anne’s Soccer Club have joined forces to raise funds to surface the lane at their grounds.  Both clubs are extremely supportive of the school and make their facilities available to us on a regular basis.  Ms. Mulhare will represent the school for this fund-raiser and we are asking for your support for this very worthy cause. We will hold a “Jersey Day” next Wednesday April 20th  and we are asking for a contribution of €2 per child or €3 per family.

ARDSCOIL NA TRIONÓIDE:  Assessment day for 6th Class next Thursday April 21st – 9.30 am. – 12.30 pm.

ROAD SAFETY:  An incident of an adult struck by the mirror of a passing car was reported during the week.  We are asking drivers to be aware of the danger and pedestrians not to walk on the edge of the footpath.

TRACKSUIT:  We will be taking orders in the coming weeks for September.  Our supplier is requesting details by early May.

COMMUNITY NEWS

KARATE CLASSES:  Every Thursday night from 6pm-8pm in St. Anne’s Hall.  Cost:  €10 per person.

Welcome back to everyone after the Easter break.

SWIMMING:  Ms. Goff’s class begin lessons tomorrow, Wednesday.

TIN WHISTLE:  Classes resume this week at the usual times.

HOMEWORK CLUB:  Resumed yesterday and will continue Monday – Thursday.

ART GROUP (4th class):  Back this Friday at the usual time.

BALLYLINAN JUVENILE G.A.A.:  Training commences for the following groups on Friday April 8th – 6.45 pm – 7.45 pm at the club grounds.

U8 & U10 Boys

LIP SYNC BATTLE:  Launch at Murphy’s Pub Saturday  April 9th at 9pm.

COLOUR FUN/RUN WALK:  Full details tomorrow, Wednesday.

ATHLETICS:  The annual student games will be held at St. Abban’s Athletics Club on Sunday April 17th at 1.30 pm.   The games include individual and relay events for boys and girls from U7 to U17.   Children from Ballylinan will join with children from Arles and Killeen to accumulate points for their team.  This is the 43rd year of the event.

 

NEWSLETTER 14/03/16

1916 – 2016:
Schools all over Ireland will hold flag raising ceremonies tomorrow (Tuesday).  We will hold our ceremony at 12 noon and the wider school community is invited to attend.

1st PENANCE:
Congratulations to the children from 2nd class who received their first penance last Tuesday night.  We were very proud of them and thanks to Ms. Farrell and Mrs. Hurley for all their work in preparing the children for the sacrament.  Thanks also to Mrs. Browne, Margaret Brennan and the children from the choir who turned out in great numbers to support 2nd Class.

Refreshments were provided after the ceremony by our Parents Association and we are very grateful to the people who gave their time to make the occasion special for the children and their families.

SKIPPING:
The workshop held on Thursday was a great success.  It is wonderful  to see so many children skipping at play time.

St. ABBAN’S QUIZ:
Great news!  The team of Lorcan Page (6th), Conor Loughman (6th),Jesse McEvoy (5th) and Cian Dunne (5th) won the Fr. Kennedy Cup at the final held in Killeen last Thursday night.  The winning score of 68 out of 70 questions was the highest team score in a final since the competition began in 1971.  Well done lads!

The school will close on Wednesday 16th at 12.30 (infants from 12.20) and will re-open on Monday April 4th at 9.15am.
